I am now the owner of a Yamaha PW80. No it was not planned or even expected. I walked into the shop and there was this ratty bike I had seen sitting around for a couple weeks. I told the shop mechanic, Mark, about the races in Dublin coming up. He pointed to the ratty bike and talked about it as a Motard then I found out it was his and he really didn't want to mess with it. It needs a piston and maybe a few other things and a major facelift. I looked on Ebay to see how much rebuild parts are going for and I was sold. A Japanese bike with Chinese priced replacement parts. The bike isn't for me...really it's not I bought it for my daughter. I let the smoke out of the regulator on her electric scooter and have been looking for something gas powered for a while and this just fell in my lap. I didn't get any photo's of it but I will and you will see the build up. Yes it's a long term build but it's not a Mid so it belongs here I think. My only worry is it's a 2-smoke and the power is nothing to ignore. I think I'll leave it in first gear and let her ride that for a while. Being semi-auto she'll figure out how to shift that soon enough...the girls like her Daddy she loves speed. rock2rock2rock2rock2

Stunt do you mean as in how fast it is? If it's too fast I'll restrict the throttle. It already has a restrictor on the exhaust which slows it down. After I ride it I'll decide what to do.

$100 and I get a new tank and seat cover and the mechanic is pretty sure it just needs a piston. Probably has tires too which he'll throw in but not sure. If not I still stole it.

i didnt know they made horizontal two strokes? dosent look too bad i suppose

The Nutty Professor
10-04-2009, 07:17 AM
Let's see this is how it's going. I have recovered the seat and was given a brand new rear tire!!!! I've started repainting some of the plastics purple which is her favorite color. I Ebay-ed a Yamaha Genuine piston which is .25 over so I have the bore the cylinder and that's going to be free. The piston was $10! On BikeBandit $50! I then bought rings for $17 off BikeBandit. So I basically got a overbore piston for $27 which is less than half. I'll take luck any day!

I'm going to start bead blasting some of the rough parts and use the flash paint technique on the metal stuff. This is taking a lot longer than I thought it would but Dublin comes first right now.

The Nutty Professor
12-08-2009, 08:05 PM
Well the rush is on. I decided to get this done for a next to the tree Christmas present. I've stripped the bike down to the nuts and bolts. I've stripped the frame, primed and repainted it with black enamel. The swing arm was stripped then painted. The header was beaded blasted just on the rust spots and then repainted with high heat paint. I should mention all the parts I listed above have been bead blasted also. I took the forks apart and the smell of the fish oil in there would gag a maggot :fudge:!!!! I still need to buy grips, a chain, and pegs and that should be it. I used steel wool to clean up the wheels. Well one. I'll take a photo of the clean one and one of the dirty one to show just how ragged this thing was not that you couldn't tell from the other photo's. I've thrown up a couple quick photo's I took tonight.

She's going back together, but I still have to get the bored cylinder which I should get Tuesday. It's hard to see in the photo of the rims but the rim in the back is nasty as hell and the one in the front I used fine steel wool to pretty it up. After that I hit it with enamel paint on the hub and the spokes (Photo of that later). I don't like the crusty old shock but finding one on short notice is out so I cleaned it as best I could and put it back on. The rear swing arm looks nice but the paint isn't going to hold up so in no time I'm going to have to snatch it back off and redo it but that's ok. I need to take the rear rim in and have the new tire put on also. The front will do it's in a lot better shape. Then I'll mount the forks and handle bars. On Tuesday I havae to get a chain and grips too. The grips he'll have the chain...here's hoping. If he doesn't I'll hit Tractor Supply and just get a black one. I want gold for the Christmas :bling2: factor. 12 days and counting.

A little more work. I used a leotard stretched over the tank to get the affect you see. Purple is her favorite color so that's the color I went with. Why not all the plastics were trashed and needed work so I used that color. Now I have to see if the technique will work on the tail-section?

Yea 2 strokes do rock, they have awesome powerbands. You could probably get an idle thing(can't think of the right word) that stops you from going say to 1/2 throttle to wide open. She can only hit 1/2 throttle. I wish I would remember what its called. Your bike probably had it but it was removed. You could also just have her hit 1st and 2nd and don't go any other gear until she gets used to it.

Well it wasn't planned really it wasn't but that's how it's ending up. She won't ride it. She says "Daddy that thing almost killed me I-Am-Not-Getting-On-It-Again!!!!!!!!" So I think I'll start putting parts in it to practice in the dirt first then find parts to Mini-Tard it. But the parts I find will sit in a corner until I have all of them to put on at once. Then there's very little down time for the bike. I also have the X22 I want to build up for the street. That's a build as I find the parts project. I want that to have the X12 body work and a few other street oriented pieces. Swheels I plan on putting your front end mods on it. That bike will be a test bed for ideas. It's easier to test ideas over a long haul if you do it on a street bike in my opinion.

swheels
01-12-2010, 08:37 AM
As for the x22 you need to rake that baby out a bit. Just guessing on the test aspects of the fronend on that chassis.Would more than likely give you a totally different feedback from a chassis that has more frontend rake. I'd be all over the ones that will be hitting the track first and far most.

I've long found out that testing in the lot is good to get somewhat of an idea as to what the bike might do. When your out on the track you can only hope for better results which most of the time happens.
There was a point though when i was settin the bike up to the lot where i use to practice the most. Then got to a track and said WTF? Total different feel from the bike.bluelaugh So i learned my lesson and try not to make that mistake again.

The Nutty Professor
01-25-2010, 02:01 PM
I have a Noleen shock to use on the front to duplicate Swheels modification. I knew when it didn't work on the X22 I'd find a use for it! I've already raised the rear a good 3-4 inches. It wasn't easy but it was free! I have a plan to redo it but for now what I have works. I need a lathe and a second shock to pull off the new mod. I also want a second set of rims so I can mount street tires and use the bike to practice in the dirt and on the road. The dirt keeps the reflexes sharp catching slides which are fun as hell. I might just open up a long term on this one when I get all the parts together to put a Tard/MX bike together. All the forums call these bikes slow...maybe but there are more cheap go-fast tricks than most people ever try to use and I'm cheap and I like to go-fast rock2

i like pics like these. I want to start messing with forks and shocks sooner or later on my lil bikes and big bikes. I'd like to shorten the forks on the f4 drag bike rock2....my f4i needs the forks rebuilt too banghead

As far as that all you need is good manual, correct tools, arms witch aren't growing out of your ass and brain in the right place and you're good. I have rebuilt some forks, well, they werent bikes, but they were cycles, pretty complicated though!

Any questions about the photo's just ask. All i can say is DAM!!!!!! That is a bitch! I'm ttrying to figure out how they held the cap end while they welded it???? Becuase the spring inside had to make it a little hard to do.:dunno:
I have a few ideas nothing great but i'll be back. agreed it wouldn't be worth the time and effort.

Well the stem bolt is too short so I have to fix that. I put it together anyway just to ride it around. It was twitchy and steered to the left. I'm going to have to drill and tap the stem bolt to get it to work right. Oh friggin joy!

Made progress. A little welding, drilling, and tapping for a bolt and it feels better turning and braking. The handlebars are out of alignment but I'll get that figured out. It has stopped trying to tuck on me that had to be the lack of play in the steering. I didn't get the bearings right. But I got it now with a lot of riggin. I can touch my knee down with th knobbies on the bike still? I tried the leg out motard style and didn't like it one bit! So far this bike is the best damn investment I've made in a long time. The front end not so much but I'll just over ride it til I crash.

All I need are tires. Well for now. A couple of more Go-Fast and it'll be done for a while. Here are a few photo's. To put the CRF50 front end on I had to use both sets of bearing races and weld them together back to back. But it works very well. It's almost impossible to see in the photo but I tried. I didn't take photo's with it apart and I don't want to do it now. Maybe later. With one disc it doesn't brake like I want but it will do. For those who think one disc is enough I for one will never be a believer. Too much brake makes life so much easier.

you gonna race it?
what about the midbike :dunno:

Blitz I cam all the way back to your post after today to answer your question. God Damn It No! Meaning the Mid Bike as of now can friggin rot! I Just got on the damn thing at it spit me off after a block. It started leaking from multiple places (oil). It got on the back tire and I saw sky then ground. Until I have plenty of time or money to let someone else get it done I'm just going to work on other parts of it and it'll just friggin sit there. No I'm not getting rid of it but I'm not going to let it kill me either. I put it back it the garage and got on the PW. My neighbor came over after I parked it and asked me if I was crazy? I asked him why he thought that. He said when I was on the PW I was hauling butt on the street and the bike was all over the place and I never slowed down. Yes I felt the knobbies moving around but I was to mad to care.

So future money is going into the PW and the X15 will have to sit and wait.

That is the furtherest thing from my mind Sir Blitz. The origin (I'd have to go find the exact time period) of the term is this: In days of old the saying actually started in the church. It meant God please damn this situation or God's Damnation. "May God Damn you forever." How this got turned into a barb at the Lord? But what little I can find seems to point directly at the good ole U.S. Souther Baptist Churches....ok enough pointing fingers just realize Blitz brah I value my existence and what comes after.

And yes the mechanic is obviously a stone idiot. crazy_smilie And that is not a comeback at you Blitz I mean it. I can take apart and put a ZX-10R together from the ground up. I can tell you were every bolt on a CBR-600f2 goes just by looking at it (Well I could I might miss a few now) but give me a 4-stroke horizontal Honda clone and it whips my behind?!

The base for the Mid I have down but the heart of it just doesn't want to co-operate with the village idiot.

A TT91 rear tire is on it's way along with a no name front. I couldn't find a decent priced front TT and I want to ride. I'm ripping the knobbies off the tires I have on there now and I'm not getting good practice with them. I'll just use my home brew tire softener on them and throw it down the road :bananar:

I just got the TT91 in the mail and it's HUGE! I'm wondering if it will even fit? Or what the hell will I have to do to make it fit?

Got my front tire in from Ebay yesterday. It wasn't even close to the tire I ordered (Front). Tread patterns like a rain tire so I'll probably burn it up in no time. They're at the shop being mounted so maybe Saturday or Sunday I can get in some real riding on pavement.
