Ok, where to start? I've been reading on the forum trying to get a little educated on what it's going to take for this project to be successful, and now I think I have an idea of the general direction of things. Any advice from people who know what they're talking about is welcome.

I'm 6'2" about 155lbs and I want to build a fully street ready, quality midbike. I was going to buy a used one, but after seeing all of the aftermarket and modded parts out there I decided to build it from the ground up. Money is something of an issue, but I'm prepared to pay to do this right. Here's a list of the general ideas I've been knocking around.

Rim upsize: so far, it seems 12" front and 13" rear is the way to go?

Swingarm Extension: Only if necessary for rim fitment.

Upgrades to front and rear shocks

Tires: The Maxxis are what's caught my eye so far, I want to be able to deal with rain if necessary.

Brakes: no plans yet, but curious about rearset compatibility issues.

Rearsets: I want quality, affordable, nothing fancy.

Guages: Planning on the trailtech, need to know if speedo is adjustable if I do tire upsize.

Fairings: Stock, custom paint, maybe a little bodywork.

Lights: led in all signals, need to know if some kind of regulator is needed. For the headlight, I do have this HID out of an Audi TT laying around.......otherwise a fog lamp

Chain: Upgrade for sure, prob 420 RK

Sprockets: Already bought 28 tooth 7075, curious if anyone has experience messing with the ratios on bigger tires. Looking to be able to cruise @ 65 without blowing motor, but I don't really care about going faster than that.

Motor: Hopefully I'll be getting that head from blitz, and I was planning on getting the Evos 140. One thing I was curious about was if you can replace the IRK for something that puts out adequate power for lighting, if not how about full LED setup? Otherwise, carb, exhaust(I'll build this), intake, whatever.

Electronics: High Rev CDI, High output coil, upgraded plug and wire and whatever else I can find.

I'll deal with the other stuff as it comes up, feel free to offer suggestions. I'm not as concerned with looks as I am with quality.:)

Dam bro... sounds perfect. thats gonna be a hell of a build-up. so when you say your not gonna buy used but instead from the ground up... what do you mean? like purchase a frame and then go from there etc........

Exactly, only to get MBO so I can drive it on the street. The only things that I leave stock will be the things that don't really make sense to spend the extra cash on.:yup:

Lights: I have a RED rear LED light for X18 - $7 shipped

I am 250lbs. and my 114 keeps up
Rim size: 12 inch wheels you could go with NSR wheels, Honda Ape wheels or Galespeed 12 inch wheel(BTW 1200 bucks for the galespeed) nice though. 13 inch wheels you might have to modify some scooter wheels.

Swingarm will need modding with bigger wheels

Suspension is a must for any track or street bike

Brakes replace the stock pads for quality ones until you upgrade.
I would upgrade front and rear master later and brake calipers

Tire in the rain, I think any thing is better than stock

L.E.D's replace ment bulbs 1156 headlight/1157 taillight/(194/168 turnsignal)
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=CAR

Engine if you want to go bigger without losing your light option find a motor with an outer rotor kit(you can run lights with this one) inner rotor you cant run light.

Body: may I recomend some reflective decals or pinstriping for the night riding.

with that motor your building, a 17/28 gearing will have you cruising at 60-70
its no strain at all
i just replaced my irk with a flywheel and stator, its easy if you have a puller

Blitz with 140 and head, cdi, etc, what do you think TOP speed will be? Also, thx for contributions everyone else. Getting impatient, might just buy complete off of Craigslist and upgrade.:dunno: Also, any one near MN? seems to be a huge lack here(no surprise, we can only ride like 5 mos. max out of the year). Also, NE1 with HID experience?

Blitz$M.Inc.$
04-08-2009, 04:20 AM
depends on the gearing howler, id recommend a 17/28, and that should get you in the 80 neighborhood if you tuck
i wouldnt go that fast on the stock tires, well at least long, i guess its ok to test

]-[owler
04-08-2009, 10:11 AM
Tires are the top of my list. I decided I might hold off on the rim upgrade until I educate myself a little better, and then combo it with a dual front brake mod. Just wondering, was that top speed estimate based on bigger(12"fr/13"rr) or maxxed out stock wheels(90/90/10, 130/70/10 i think?). NE how, I got a few of my parts in, and I'm thinking of buying a bike on craig's here locally. Would an X7 be an ok start to mod into x-18? I would be looking to transplant x18 frame into it.

BMArias15
04-08-2009, 11:06 AM
i'd just go the x18 and i also would go with a used on craigslist but since ur gonna take the sucker completely apart i wouldnt spend much money on it.... less than $200..... the reason i say that is cause your gonna need things from stock and buying them will eventually cost ya.... so just check around bro but ya gotta be patient.... impatience = $$$$$$$$

]-[owler
04-08-2009, 11:23 AM
How about an X-19 with title and a razor pocket for $400? I heard the frames on these aren't as strong, but maybe swap down the road. Razor can teach my little girl how to rip!

BMArias15
04-08-2009, 12:59 PM
Im by no means a pro on the x19/x15 but i think whats weak is the swingarm not the frame.... also what sucks bout the frame is that in order to go larger on the engine you have to mod the frame.... so consider all that too

but i dunno bout that price cause u wanna tear down and rebuild the sucker completely.....

rene13
04-08-2009, 02:44 PM
I pretty much have a complete roller with MCO, willing to let go for the right price.

Blitz$M.Inc.$
04-08-2009, 03:40 PM
howler, ya those grips rock, id say if you can get a x19 then go ahead
its easier to replace parts with upgrades then build from scratch, plus you can start off riding, instead of just looking at an unfinished project
the 15/19 have the strongest frame and the weakest swingarm, but ive had mine years and no probs, so i bet if you take care of it, it will be fine
i do not recommend the bigger rims, for one, the front would hit the bodywork from being so close, and the rear would involve a swingarm mod just fit
besides the 'dimes' are cool

]-[owler
04-08-2009, 11:37 PM
It's looking like the 19 for now. I didn't know they had the strongest frame. I want the bigger tires because on my scooter's 10" potholes very scary @ 45. Don't really want to hit one @ 60 with that small tire. Since I'll need to upgrade swinger anyway, I'll just do it b4 tires wear out. BTW I'll get non OEM ASAP! Also, Ive got a wicked rear shock upgrade planned.stirthepot Got my idea for color and graphic scheme, I'll show it when I have it drawn up.

]-[owler
04-09-2009, 02:48 AM

I just found this, and just wanted to share:

Although your bike's rear wheel may seem to be in-line-according to the stamped lines on the swingarm or adjusters-the factory markings are notoriously inaccurate. For years, savvy (and thrifty) riders have used the "string method" of verifying that their wheels are aligned correctly. You need a string a little longer than twice the length of your bike, a rear stand and an assistant. Find the center of the string and wrap it once around the leading edge of your front tire, an inch or so below the axle. Now, pull one end of the string on either side of the bike to the rear. Lie down on your stomach and pull the string taut at both ends. Have your assistant make sure that the string is lined up evenly off both sides of the front tire. When the string is pulled tight from the front to rear tire, it leaves a slight gap at the back of the front tire because the rear tire is wider. While you sight down the string, have your assistant adjust the wheel so the gaps between the string and the rear edge of the front tire are equal on both sides. Keep your hands steady so the string only lightly touches the front of the rear tire. Compare the gaps on either side at the back of the rear tire; If they aren't equivalent, the adjuster on the side that is closer to the string will need to be tightened.

With all of the swingarm mods and overhauls going on, I figured some of you guys might want toknow how to do this on the cheap.thumbsup2

you may have some trobble with hole-sh*ts, i havent heard many good things from them.
nice track, except i see some major issues (besideds it would be louder than crap) is your bike may be too big for that tight track, i'm willing to bet a lil eruo mini could set a better lap time than a mid. (the concrete floor will be a pain to keep your tires on) lowsides beware!

you would probably be stuck in 2nd gear for the entire race. do they have a big parking lot?

Blitz$M.Inc.$
04-13-2009, 02:13 PM
i set the rear wheel by measuring the axle on center to the end of the swingarm, then i lock it down and spin the wheel and watch the chain, you can see and hear if its straight
i dont like that track, too small, looks ok for rollerskating bluelaugh

what site did you order the tires from
?

]-[owler
04-19-2009, 10:23 PM
You know, I thought that I ordered them from that site, but I may have ebayed. Anyway, that's a good price from the moto superstore.:yup: I'm sure that Kenda would be an improvement over stock. Even when I upgraded the stock tires on my scooter, which was a Honda Elite, it was an improvement. I think it's important to buy the tire that right for how you ride. In your case I'd prob go full race setup, but you'll probably pay for it in longevity. You'll just need to decide whether grip or wear or price rate in importance. But I need to say that I haven't even been on one of these, so I'd ask someone who's had ample saddle time for their recommendation. Hope I helped a little at least.:dunno:

hey, i only got my ged but ill try to answer you bluelaugh
my x18 has a battery and im running a total loss system so there isnt any power coming from the motor
so it depends on the motor you get, if it has a stator then you could wire your electronics to it and they would only work when the motor was running
my 18 has a led tail light (its awesome) and i had some led turn signals in there too but they just arent as bright as the regular peanut bulbs
howler i recommend that you get a battery, your E parts will have a better supply of power
nice trick with the wood in the tires but that aint gonna makem seat easier, you need a gangster air compressor and take out the valve core and blast it full, then reinsert the core real fast

you dont need to take out the valve if your compressor is gangsterrr rock2.....if you got a weak one it might help seat the tire but you dont have to worry about getting it back in with the quickness bcuz the tire is seated for good after it seats thumbsup2

Ya, not worried about seating tires. Did my first chop and weld, seat mounts. I'm loving welding on thicker metal, you can actually watch weld penetrate. All previous welding was on auto sheet metal, tack tack tack......... this will be way easier to get quality welds I think. Should be getting rims and shock soon, I cant wait to actually be able to sit on my bike! I'm going to set seat back 2", same with swing extension. As soon as holeshiester gives me my cash back, I can look @ getting engine & wiring setup. Until then, frame will get worked over. I may buy stock bike just to be able to ride b4 snow flies, so many details to work out with this one.....rolleye0010

Oh, BTW I'm going to try an all x18 rear brake setup. Two up front, one in rear. All brake pads and fittings the same size. Ordered dual banjo that Blitz posted in his dual brakes saga thread(I'll let ya know how it works). Chugging along, selling old projects to fund this is taking up a lot of my time. I need advice on what to use for frame tubing additions(something that matches up with the approx 3/4" frame tubes).

Ya, I love my MR2.:yup:

OK, so I got the 10mm dual banjo bolt. I go out to the garage all excited, and find out it doesn't fit in my caliper. From the dual brakes saga thread, I read that X18 rear calipers have 10mm banjo bolts. I can use the dual in my master, so that's fortunately not a big deal. I measured all three banjo bolts: rear master, both calipers, all 8mm. Just wondering what brakes I have? Also, does anyone have a caliper laying around that matches mine? I'd like to have all three the same. I need to buy a x18 front rotor and would like to know specs and where to get one.

]-[owler

Two rear calipers in front, one in rear. I want to try this because replacing parts will be easier. Send me a pic of your caliper when you get the chance. I just want to make sure that these are x18 rears. I'm going to need new front rotor tho, need them to have equal wear. I meant to post pic of my car in last post, winter tires on it BTW.

Blitz$M.Inc.$
05-07-2009, 04:45 PM
howler, i just went and measured the banjo bolt that i used for my setup, the head is 10mm but the threads are about 8mm wide
so i suppose the rear calipers and master are 8mm, that would mean that the front caliper banjo is 6mm
sounds like your gonna need 1 or 2 lines that are 10mm/8mm to run duals using that posh master
i held the rear caliper up to the front one time with that idea and it didnt look like it bolted up that well, like the spacing was right but the pads didnt cover the rotor properly
i went with the x6 calipers, i still had to mod the fork but they cover the pad fully and it has one big piston in it instead of multiple small ones

]-[owler
05-07-2009, 11:48 PM
I think I'll end up getting the two lines 8mmto10mm, but still need to know where to get a new x18 rotor(I don't have a rotor, so I can't measure myself) and a good place to get the lines in braided stainless. Any help is much appreciated.thumbsup2

Not trying to thread jack but lets get some things straight here so the banjo bolt that goes on the rear caliper is a 10mm banjo and the banjo on stock front master cylinder (Front brake) is a 10mm banjo too right. so you can use the rear caliper and line and it will be a direct fit to the front master right.

ok sopacked, here's the deal.

I still need to make the brackets for the front, so there isn't much to show but I'll take a photo. Going through some crazy poop right now, so I'm not sure what kind of progress will be made(hopefully I can get a place with a decent garage).

All of my calipers are x18 rear calipers. They all have 8mm banjo BOLTS. Rear brake will be same setup as stock. On the front I have a Posh master cylinder, it has a 10mm Dual banjo BOLT. My lines are braided stainless w/changeable(unscrew them) 10mm banjo FITTINGS. What I'm looking for is 8mm threaded FITTINGS. If I am not able to find them, I may just try to run them as is, or; I may tap the front calipers to accept a 10mm BOLT.

Blitz, your help is invaluable, I was just trying to be lazy with the bracket. I was wondering if you could trace the outline of the bracket and send it to me? I'll gladly paypal you a bit for your trouble, I just want a stencil to work off of.

I already have everything but the fittings, I really don't want to sink more money into brakes. I'm not rich, that's why I love these bikes. If I could just spend whatever I wanted, I wouldn't have gone through the work this bike has taken. BTW, I never got a receipt of sale for my rolling chassis(kind of a roadblock for getting this thing street legal).

Blitz, that would be much appreciated. Don't worry about time frame, with breakup and having to find a new abode, I won't be able to complete build for a while I guess. I'm just trying to get all the welding done b4 ex's bro-in-law takes his welder back.

It's a festiva. Got it cheap but it needed some work(struts all around, belts filters, plugs, fluids, brakes, a lug bolt, exhaust, stereo, misc lights, cracked frnt grill, cv halfshaft) plus I did some body work to patch up holes, shaved all emblems & mouldings, lowered it, and painted it with undercoat(looks like truck bedliner). Runs great now, much more functional than my other car. I can fit 2 duffel bags in the storage compartments my MR2 has(if they're small ones), this car has way more cargo capacity. Hoping to get the midbike done by spring. BTW, if anyone can trace their x18 rear brake caliper bracket and send it to me, I'll gladly pay for shipping plus a couple bucks(I can't find anyone who just sells the bracket). Also, I can only feel 3 gears when I shift the motor I got. Any suggestions? 125cc Lifan

Holy crap, I just looked through the whole thread(realized how much I've learned). Sorry that it has taken me so long to add anything new, but home life has taken the front seat for a while now. Also, my computer took a crap on me(still not working right). I would like to mention that tonight the monster came alive, it ran a little!!!!!!!!! Much to do yet. Soooo bada$$, I heard it run!!!!!!!!!! Here's the current rundown: Need to know what weight of front shock oil to run in stock x18 shocks to give a real stiff ride(just the way I like it, maybe not the best but I like the feel). Blitz, normal adhesive type velcro on the seat is ok? Blinker wiring needs work yet, but I'm not blowing fuses anymore(only took about ten to get it right). If you read the whole post you'll see my gf is crazy, but she's a heck of a lady. I'm sticking with stock front brake for now, but I have both rotors mounted. I'm only feeling 3 gears from my Lifan 125, any wisdom? Got my rear brake bracket and exhaust all squared away. I need to get an exhaust gasket and fab a rear hanger, carb tune will be needed too(will only run with choke on). Vapor is working great, dashboard isn't hooked up yet. I want to get it parking lot ready, then take it in to a shop to fine tune wiring. Soon my friends, soon.

Monster, jc what kind of riding you normally do(sorry to be skeptical, but I know not everyone agrees on this). I will be street riding primarily. Drew out the template for my exhaust hanger and fixed one of my wiring issues tonight. Need to tune carb yet. Seeing as I haven't ever tuned a carb b4, this may take a little while(currently only runs with choke on). Glad to be back guysthumbsup2.

only runs on choke means its too lean, so it will run with reduced air
clean the pilot jet and/or turn the idle and air/fuel richer

Had my my needle set to leanest setting, tonight I put it @ 4 of 5. I need to wait until 9am tomorrow so neighbors can't call the cops on me(lolz). Need some wisdom on the air screw thingy(gf printed out rene's carb tuning pages, but too large to read @ 72 dpi, going to ask her to print smaller tomorrow so's I can read itrolleye0010). I'll post some pics with descriptions. So excited to finally get some life from the beast!

Ok , so here we go with the updates. These are the photos of my first go at the exhaust, and mounting my Vapor. I decided to weld another segment on the exhaust to make it fit the 2" tail extension correctly(angle is a bit strange, may have to work out some issues. you'll see in the next pics). Also, shock has been changed out for stock(fitment issues).

Here's my most current pics, changing daily now. #1 - Exhaust hanger w/rubber isolator. #2 - dashboard, anyone used this w/Vapor yet(want to know what I can utilize)? #3 - my Vapor, all mounted up. #4 - What does this screw do? #5 - Here is my most recent photo, showing exhaust and seat cover. Please help me solve my issues. I hope to make this street legal by the time an annual scooter rally happens. I'll show them what midbikes are all about.:DJ:!

So I set my needle in all positions, and now it acts like WOT. No matter what setting, scary. BTW, is there supposed to be a spring on top of my slide(I don't have one). I was also wondering if y'all with fiberglass exhaust wraps had them smoke a lot when you first installed them? Sorz K_Pac, but looking for a little more detail than that(I do thank u for responding tho).

Blitz$M.Inc.$
06-18-2010, 04:00 AM
ya the pipe wrap will 'burn in' and smoke for a bit
what carb do you have? all the carbs have a spring to let the throttle return after you twist it
does yours return?
that screw you posted looks like the air/fuel screw

No Blitz no spring in my carb. I was wondering if maybe slide is floating causing the WOT situation. Where is a good place to get parts for my Keihin?
