i bought a shock from holeshot
its the preformance one for the x15, its the same one pbu has
the shock looked really nice and was adjustable
it also weighs 2lbs which is way less than the stock weight of 5lbs
so i put it on and when i let it down my bike slams to the ground, almost cracking my rear fender
so its a air shock too so i figured i just needed to add air
i got a little 1.5 gallon compressor that does 135psi max
it didnt do squat to the shock
so i figured that i needed more volume air, i work in a garage so i took it to work and tried our compressor
i had the shock laid down this time and when i tried to give it air LOTS of oil came out, i didnt think there was supposed to be oil in a air shock
so i got some air in finally and when put on the bike it was only slightly better
then i figured id remove more of the oil to allow more air volume, and it hasnt been working out
do i need one of those air pumps that have the dial gauge on it, or is the shock broke or otherwise
im sad
for once id like to do a mod that just works

Sounds like a blown seal to me Blitz. Your compression should have done the job. It was probably leaking air. The higher PSI of your compressor at work blow the seal out. It was probably a very small cut in an o-ring you would never see. Anything PBU sells seems to be Nicky-Neat but doesn't function very well. After my 1:1 experience and mountain bike adventures I'm very reluctant to go with anything other than a known rear shock twocents

Ok heres the dilly your little compressor at home or at work will not have enough psi's to pump up that shock. Most air shocks have a little oil in them if not they will go bad from the heat build up from useage.I have one of those little tire pumps that plugs into the cigarette lighter of cars. That will do the job. I have one that pumps 320psi's, i pump my air shock up to 240psi's.The oil probably shot out from the force of the bike when it came down. The air filled shocks have a single chamber with a floating piston that keeps the oil and air seperated.

When i first got my air shock i did the samething you did i got fairly decent size compressor in my garage.I could not believe it couldn't pump up the shock.

Did alot of oil come out or a little? If only a little you can get away with it.The one thing i'll say about the air shocks there lighter and sssmmmoooothe as silk. So you'll need over 200psi that shock should handle it no problem. No matter wha you do it's gonna loose air when you go to take the nozzle off.I hated that so i use to try and over fill it.BTW before the seal in the blow from to much air the air pump nozzle will shoot off first.Ask me how i know.thinking_smilieLOL

dang i got one of those air compressors too
its actually part of a jump box
i never thought of it cuz its a cheesy one i thought
but it had a dial on it that went over 200
the shock is off the bike now but i put air in it....well see
im just gonna start askin you S since you know everything

Eh, blitz i think you may have goofed something up with this one.

The shocks come with the pre load retainers really loose, all you really would have needed to do is tighten the pre load collars with one of those half open wrenches and you would have been good to go.

As far as the shock it self goes, it is a oil shock but also is nitrogen charged like mostly other shocks. It is not a air shock nor do i advertise that on my site or anywhere else.

I would just try tightening up the spring and see what happens, hopefully you didn't cause any damage by blowing that air into hit because they do come fully charged and filled with oil from the factory.

Let us all know how things work out.

tightning those collars did nothing
the spring is weak on this shock and it relies on the air part
it has a air inlet same as a tire, why not air?
even on the pbu site it says coil over air design
i did not mess this shock up, if you have another one then you try for your self
air=nitrogen lol

The people at PBU are not the brightest bunch, i doubt they even have any testing into that shock. The only time it probably even got looked at is when they took the picture for it.

I have tested this shock on dirt bikes and have not had issues once the spring was tightened.

Also, air and nitrogen are not the same there are many differences. I would just bring it to a local bike shop and see if they could charge it up for you quick, it should only cost a couple bucks.

i will try that but if that doesnt work then the shock must be either too weak for mids or defective
do you offer an exchange?

Sure, i will offer an exchange if it is defective.

I just want to note that it has been tested on the x15 and a few pit bikes for proper fit and performance so i know that is not the issue here.

The recharge should take care of everything for ya.

Let me know soon if it does not though so i can get you one for VIR

air is basically nitrogen. air = 79% nitrogen.

You might wanna try a stiffer spring.

Hmm..never a dull moment with our little toys, huh Blitz? armyguy

Todays lesson for X18 and I was clutch adjustment (it was grabbing even in) and how loose important stuff like CDI bolt and contacts get after the first hard ride. wave_finger ("But X18- my power band just died..and it makes horrific stuttering noises..and I think I'm gonna cry...")

Everything A-ok now.

Yeah, we've managed to capture the imagination of X18's entire block now. Don't be surprised if we convert the whole road to a new mid-bike club LOL!
