Hi everyone before i start let me introduce myself,my name is Miguel and i live in Tampa,Fl were its hot all year round :). Well i started my pocketbike craze a couple of months ago when a friend of mine gave me a pocketbike he found by the dumpster and he figured hey let me give this to Miguel, Thanks buddy all i needed was a new addiction. So i started looking around trying to figure out what kind of bike it was till i did a "Cateye" or as some people like to refer to them as "Crapeye". So i decided to give it a shoot, mind you this bike was missing all its fairings, frame was rusty, it wasn't anything special....yet. So my search led me to 2 forums Pocketbikeplanet and Midbike Nation were i registered to and started my search on trying to put this bike together. Well after 2 weeks of trying to find parts i get a pm from Randi (125ccCrazy) and we got to talking and he got me a set of x1 wheels for my cat. So we start talking on yahoo messenger and he introduces me to his world, immediatly im hooked. So Randi and I start getting ideas together and one day i woke up and decided i was gonna make my Cateye into a drag bike....ooooh my says my wife as she knew it meant trouble. So i start my mission on this bad boy.My goals is to put a Briggs & Stratton engine into the frame of this Cateye and make all the cateye haters drool :). Onto some pics.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g288/TeRRoR999/pic1111.jpg

So i figured at this point " hey this might work " and started getting stuff together...

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g288/TeRRoR999/cat3.jpg

So at this point i talk to Randi and ask him if he could fab up a piece that would tie in the parts i cut off, and Randi being one of the coolest guys said yes. Now the mission begins lol........

TeRRoR

..... So at this point i start think that the best action is to have the cat take a trip to Ohio where Randi lives so he could put his magic touch. This is where things get crazy. randi gets a knock on the door and to his surprise he recieves this box with something special inside lol. But when he opens it he messages me with good new and bad news. So he proceeds with the good that it arrived but it looks like a pretzel. At this point my mission gets put on hold as he sends me pics...

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g288/TeRRoR999/PICT0003.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g288/TeRRoR999/PICT0001.jpg

so at this point im like "Man what luck" but Randi being the guy that he is tells me don't worry yet let me see what i can do. the next day he messages me the next day with pics and he is where we are at...

Boxes arrived like crazy from members of Midbike Nation and another from Redryderaus
Requests came pouring in from the left and from the right
Hey Randi..... Mod my swingarm, my frame, Hey.... can you make me a new midbike?

LOL....

this lil frame will be getting alot of rework to work with his hopped Briggs engine..... I'm gonna cut the swingarm tabs off and weld on some new thicker tabs for 5/8" bearings so we can run a jackshaft through the swingarm for double duty as a swingarm pivot shaft and also as a jackshaft... I may throw the swingarm I was building for my son's cat on here and build something different for my son's bike and set his up with a jackshaft also, this will give me more gearing ratios and allow me to use a narrower swingarm and the 3 spoke wheels off my x12 on it..

I like the idea of a drag race meet, that would be sweet... I can get into drag racing more than track racing, I'm too leary of a wipe out, my back would never handle hitting the pavement..

More pics to come on Miguels project as we get further along on it...

one thought is to put foot peg brackets back on like they came with, two tabs welded down off each "doughnut" with a pipe running side to side through each tab and then the peg brackets welded to each end of the pipe that way the stress will be distributed through both sides at the same time...

These are not hardware store washers, they are 1/4" steel bearing supports for a minibike jackshaft but we are making double duty of them as using them for a jackshaft and pivot shaft for the swingarm.. The jackshaft will run though the swingarm..... I'll weld tabs off of those downwards with 1" holes drilled in each tab, then a pipe will run through each tab, all welded together of course and then I'm thinking two suppost bars running from the rear of the engine plate to the cross bar... This will be more solid than stock, the stock brackets for the swinger were approx 1/8" and the stock pivot bolt was
10mm, the new JS will be 5/8"... Miguel will have endless gearing options as there will be 4 gears, one on the clutch, two on the jackshaft and one on the rear wheel... He can switch and swap for dozens of gearing ratios..thumbsup2

Rene,

I guess that would depend on what ya want, any manual shift engine will be a benifit over a single speed in my oppinion but Miguel is basically building a custom mini bike and not a mid bike.... With the single speed engine
(5hp Briggs) having a jackshaft will allow him to swap out gear ratios for drag racing, crusing, low end, top end....
I'm setting my son's 125cc cateye up with the same jackshaft through the swingarm so I can run a narrower swingarm than we had on it and to put the frt sprocket on the pivot point of the swingarm so the chain won't tighten and loosen when the shock is compressed plus it will allow me to swap out a variety of gear combos unlike running a single chain where you only have two gears and limited ratios... With the jackshaft I can run as large or small of gears I want without clearance issues unlike stock where a 17 tooth is as large as you want to go without fear of busting the engine case in the event of a chain pop...
hey randi....:clap:bows_smilie:clap:bows_smilie Thanks David, hopefully over our next lay-off (starting next week) I can get Miguels frame together and shipped back.. Lots to do yet...

I have to really look at my bike to see if I could do it without anything getting in the way. I can just imagine what performance I could get from my bike with that setup. I could really leave some cars at the light. What the price on something like that?

well the frame will have to be modded to do this set up as you will need two 5/8" i.d bearings for the jackshaft to run on and then either two more bearings in the swingarm pivot tube or bronze bushing with a 5/8 i.d.... This can't be done without welding on new brackets for the bearings and modding the swingarm for the bearings and with the x18 frame the brackets the swingarm pivot on are in front of the frame rails so thats gonna cause another situation..... Long story short, several mods will have to be done to make this work on your frame..... as far as cost for the parts, somewhere around $75-$100..

rene13

A new swingarm would probably have to be made... The sprockets would have to be on the insides of the stock swingarm so a new swinger built narrower at the front so the sprockets could be mounted to the outside like in that pic would probably be the best option...
