K so i finally had some time to start on my 18 paint jobrolleye0010.will see how she turns out. I started out using 400 grit for that nasty injection molded flash heres a few pics. later on today ill get more pics.
You gotta remove that tank cover and block sand the whole tank cover now using 45 degree strokes and 1000 grit paper or youll see the sand spots in the shine after you paint the bike. Are you going to use a high build primer to prep it?Waterbase primers are good.It gives a wide array of choices when painting the plastics due to minimal or no chemical interaction between certain paints and primers.Epoxy primers are great also but sanding epoxy primer is a labor of love.Well Ill see where youre going with it later on.What most dont know is that you can powdercoat plastic fairings.I know theres the experts here and say it cant be done but heres how its done.........you use zinc based primer and put on a high build and block sand the primer without sanding through then you can check the panels for current flow with a battery powered continuity tester.Touch both electrodes to the panel. If it beeps its good for powdercoat.Peace

lol you sanded it on the bike?
you should do body work with it apart, now you got sand dust all over the motor and everything
and wetsanding is great
yeah take the farings off and you have to at least scuff the paint instead of just sanding the mold lines thumbsup2 , cam2 i used 600 grit and i didnt have any scratches but mine is flat black so that might be why
dna316
09-15-2008, 08:14 AM
LOL. yea i already took the fairings off. it just gave me a bit more leverage while they were on the bike. just for those lines on the tank and rear. now i got all fairings off and the bike is clean lol. all i got left is to come back over it all with 1000 and water, and ill be set to start painting today hopefully. oh and blitz yea i will do that mod you did to the bottom fairing. replacing that bottom section with the aluminium. the bottom section of fairings starting to crack and make its way up the side. ill have more pics after work.

How can you powder coat plastic??, it would melt when the powder coat was baked....I believe powder coat is baked at 400 or 450 degrees, these plastic bodies will melt long before that temp is reached..

LOL, dunnonothing much out there that I would call Good in rattle cans, well not for a professional finish that is....About your only choice is Dupli Color or Plasticote...For a qaulity paint job you will need a spray gun and good automotive clear like a 2 part urethane clear...

^^^^^ i will say bullshit on that one, lol. when me and smurf did his bike its all painted and cleared by rattle can duplicolor and it was flawless. looked like it was done at a boddy shop. as long as you wet sand in between coats it turns out so sick. just take your time and sand and clean between coats and it will be fine.

honest to god truth i dont see much difference in yours and the one we did in black. the only roblem is that we done have a booth so we had a few specs of trash, but after wet5 sand and buff it was beautiful. and by no means am i claiming i can paint better then you. so dont take this in that way. peace.

No Problem, I don't claim to be a professional myself I've just been doing this since I was a kid and have used alot of different paints over the years, the spray can stuff is okay for decent job but for longevity and durability for a show finish the new urethanes and base coats are the only way to go..... On the black/green cateye I used duplicolor universal black that I sprayed through my gun after draining the cans, I mixed some kameleon flake in the paint and the sprayed several coats of 2 part urethane clear, wetsanded with 2000 annd buffed with a buffer....I even sprayed the cat outside, with the urethane clear you can buff alot of dust out unlike the spray stuff since it doesnt build very thick before it starts yellowing.... Over time that laquer will crack and check...

Yeah Kenny that is one I finished and sold about a month ago, my son's buddy bought it, after he bought it the 16mm carb broke from a bad casting, the smallest spare carb I had was an 18mm, he put that on it and the bike really screams now.... Everyone is so hooked on those tiny wt603 carbs, these engines will handle alot more carb than that with some work...thumbsup2
what are the casting marks?
casting marks are the rough lines, divets in the plastic from the seams and imperfections in the molds..

yea 125. im taking my time well that and i got a 1& half year old boy that just wants to turn the garage into his own workshop allready lol. anyways yea im thinking ill finish the wetsand with 1000 today and ill do a 2000 wet after each coat, and since im doing black and yellow it will take a bit to get all my divisor lines layed out and lined up. im confident i can get it done nicely with the rattle cans, but i also agree with you. if you want a show bike quality finish for your bike use the automotive stuff. but im not to worried bout it. a nice even glossy finish is ok for me. later on ill get into the real nice detail.

So i got a question, once i get the fairings wetsanded with 1000, and im good to go with the paint. do i lay down a nice layer of black then go over it with 2000 wet. then another coat of black. then tape my lines to do the yellow, then 2000 wetsand it, then another coat of yellow. then another2000 wet on the entire thing. then clear?

CAM CAM CAM I got to give it to you my man. Here I thought you were huffin carb cleaner bluelaugh when you said powder coat plastic. I looked it up and DAMN! I was amazed it never occurred to me thinking_smilie I think the only hold up is that our plastic fairing have a melting point that is to low. They powder coat a nylon used in office furniture and I think I know which plastic they mean but I don't know it's name. I know I'll never find a company down here. They powder coat but I wonder at their ability to do much more than car parts that's not to say they don't do good work they do fantastic work but if it's something they normally don't mess with their eyes glaze over.

You need to layer on several coats of primer, preferably high build primer, block sand that with 400, seal it with sealer and then lay down the paint...
if you are going to do yellow and black, spray a coat of white where you want the yellow, let that dry for an hour and spray the yellow...let that dry for oh maybe 5 or 6 hours depending on temp and humidity, mask off the design and then spray the black.... ALWAYS do the light colors first....Covering black or dark colors with light colors is a pain, not impossible but lots more paint and work..

no wetsanding between coats is not nec, when you see shops paint cars they generally dont unless they are getting a lot of dirt in the paint as they spray.... If each coat is sprayed without a lot of orange peel then you can just layer the paint on and then clear it
If you have a metallic, pearl or a candy paint, sanding bewteen coats is a definate NONO, you will sand off the metallic, pearls or color in areas and it will look splotchy. Sanding colors only works on solid colors..
If you are doing multi designs then a clear coat called an inner clear is sprayed over the top of the design, let dry, lightly sanded and then that designed is masked and the next one is layed out, with a inner coat sprayed over each layer, this is to protect each layer as you go and also if the paint job sets a little longer between coats of paint the inner coat will be sanded to promote adhesion to the next layer..... Hope that makes sense...

Ok so heres a quick update. I got the nose piece primered and sanded and primered again, ready for paincool_smilie. I also have the side fairings sanded taped up and im waiting for the undercoating stuff to cure. thanks blitzthumbsup2 for the suggestion that stuff is awesome, the fairings actualy feel tougher. and i also bought the plastic fusion thanks to shooterthumbsup2 for that idea. and bonded the left fairing since it was cracking to hell at the bottom by the kickstand. thats just for now cause im going to do that mod blitz did with the aluminium bottom. so heres some pics.

your farings look worse than mine and ive already wiped out once bluelaugh but you need to get a small drill bit and drill out the edge of the crack so it doesnt spread then fill it all in

thanks 125. yea i thought about something like that, then i said to myself screw it. im going to eventual cut the bottom section of the fairings off and make them out of aluminium like blitz did. this way its way easier to change the oil and i dont have to worry bout cracking or anything like that.
125ccCrazy
09-19-2008, 02:52 PM
no need to cut the bottom off just to change the oil, you can just take a string with a small nut tied to it, tape the string to the drain plug to make a plumb bob, put the fairing on and where the string touches mark it and then get a hole saw, maybe 1 1/2", drill the hole and then you can get up in there to take the plug out with an extension and socket.... You could also drill a hole in the middle of the drain plug, tap threads and screw in a drain cock with a short hose on it, this way you wouldnt even have to take the drain plug out, just open the drain cock...
Ghost Rider
09-19-2008, 02:53 PM
For the undercoating can you just tape off the front side of the plastic so it doesnt get over spray, then just spray it on the backside. No prep or sanding right?

yeah cutting the bottoms out isnt the best idea i did it on my x18 and had to make some braces to stop them from breaking since the x18 fairings dont have that extra mount like the other midbikes it was worth it since mine were all broken on the bottom
Blitz$M.Inc.$
09-20-2008, 09:50 PM
the major disadvantage of the x18 is the poor body
glad you like my advise so far
the aluminum lower panel is working out great, way better than i thought
it was a hard mod so plan it out before you try it
Heres what I use to repair broken plastics.............I got it from my local speed shop......$24.95 and well worth it....

I fixed all the broken mount holes on my X-1 plastics and two RC car plastic frames and they hold better than new.

K sorry no progress pics guys, i had to fly out to n.y my dads health is rapidly going down hill, ****ing cancer. pardon my french.
yea 18 the reason why i wanted to do that mod is cause i understand the way it all works and i know it would be structuraly sound and its like way easier to oil change since you dont have to take off the entire side fairing. blitz yea im gonna try to make the part without cutting my exsisting fairing piece off so i can take my time and bend all properly. and your pics from that post helps out like no other. and cam2 that stuff is awesome i wonder if that stuff can be used to somewhat mold, like when doing body work. i seen a set of headlight id like to replace the single headlight with a 2 light system. they allmost fit perfectly in the two holes where the small silver grill pieces go under the turn lights, will see. and ill see if i can get some more pics for you guys of the progress so far with my paint job.

cool beans
my wife would love that yellow
looks like maybe you should have primered some
i can see where the blue is so strong that it bleeds through the yellow
i had to primer my 18 before i painted it white or else it would have took a can for each panel to cover
when taping lines, dont leave the tape on for more than 8hrs, or it may pull off what you already have, also use painters tape

Or you can paint the rims black and use a yellow pin stripe right on the rim end. Gives it that 1:1 bike look. That being said I like the polished lip or painted center and polishing the rest like Blitz did. Just my twocents

oh no im not going to paint with this tape job alone, this was just to mock everything up. im going to run another line of tape over this blue tape. just past the very edge of the blue tape and im going to use a more rubberized tape i have. I already tried to use the painters tape and the lines dont come out clean with it, so i got the other tape that makes a better seal and a straighter line. but thanks for pointing that out.thumbsup2

a trick we do in autobody is to stick the tape to your pants a little to 'remove' some sticky, but still, a day is a long time
i taped a panel off, shot it, waited a few hours, and peeled it off

How can you powder coat plastic??, it would melt when the powder coat was baked....I believe powder coat is baked at 400 or 450 degrees, these plastic bodies will melt long before that temp is reached..
Heres the method they use to powdercoat plastic wood and stone and plexi-glass too...........................\
The flame-spray technique was recently developed for application of
thermoplatic powder coatings. The thermoplastic powder is fluidized
by compressed air and fed into a flame gun where it is injected through
a flame of propane, and the powder melts. The molten coating
particles are deposited on the workpiece, forming a film on
solidification. Since no direct heating of the workpiece is required, this
technique is suitable for applying coatings to most substrates. Metal,
wood, rubber, and masonry can be successfully coated by this
technique. This technology is also suitable for coating large or
permanently-fixed objects.
I hope this clears up the most commonly used method today......we get plastic sent out and powdercoated at my job everyday
I dont see why the plastic cant stand 400 degrees anyway;-even though with this process its 100% safe from harming plastic.........the exhaust pipes heats up to 1000 degrees at the manifold to the same 400 degres at the tailpiper and none of my plastics have melted yet......I got my exhaust tips directly up against the plastic.......
the x-19 that was burnt a few months ago faired well for direct flameage...........Peace

got me one of those speedos too, just came in a few days ago... The only thing is that the magnet is supposed to be attached to a spoke in the bicycle wheel so it will have to be taken out of the little clamp or find another magnet and glue it to the pb wheel..... Probably the best way to do it would be drill a slight recess in the lip of the lip of the wheel the same size as the magnet but Not too deep and then silicone or jb weld it in that pocket... Just my twocents
The vapor is definately a nicer unit with it's tach, engine temp, ect but for $12 ya can't go wrong if needing just a speedo...

If your just gonna paint the swingarm and not the whole frame I'l leave it or repaint it silver, maybe do it a plain silver like Dupli-Color's aluminum engine paint, gives it a somewhat apperance of alum... DP also has caliper paints which are designed for heat and to be somewhat fluid resistant, they have it in yellow too.....
The bike is looking good so far, nicely planned out....

The part holding the magnet is made out of brass. It's a valve stem cover with a valve stem removal tool on the other end. I drilled out the center rear of the magnet holder, where the threads are, and glued the stem removal part to the back. Then screwed it onto the valve stem and the rest you can see. That took a whole lot of staring and head scratchin' and part diggin before I figured it out. The thing to remember is I had just parked at the grocery store and opened the door to the car. I stepped on something and when I looked down at it it was 2 brass valve stem removers? Why were they there dunno I started to walk of then went back and picked them up. Within 3 days I think I was using them for this. Down side if you get like me it can damn near lead to divorce if you're married bluelaughbluelaugh

hey anyone seen these or used these. im not sure about the integrity of the extension but its made for a dirt bike so i guess its gotta be safe right. I was thinking i could buy the materials and pull apart my swingarm and take all the dimensions down and machine my own. what do you guys think?

they claim its made out of 6061-t6 aluminium and i use that at work all the time, then i looked at mcmaster-carr and the list all the different grades and their yield strenghts and all that and by what i have read so far 7075 seems stronger?????? any input would be greatly apreciated.

I dont see how it will raise the bike, the shock mount will be further back which will require the swingram to be pulled up so the shock will mount back up..It will lower the bike drastically.... If your trying to extend the swingarm just stretch the swingarm itself....It would be safer imo......

sweet. thanks man so ill just have to take my time with the design and measure and remeasure. and like you said ill need to look for another shock, what sites should i be looking at. that have shocks that will bolt right up to the 18 shock mounts without having to modify the existing mounts?

well if you extend the rear of the swingarm you can run the stock shock but the bike will set higher and the swingarm will be on more of an angl being it's longer...
Here is my set up on the x12, same swingarm as the x18

Dna I got a Harbour Freight Mig Welder and it's OK. The funny thing is it welds cheap Chinese steel great. Put in some quality steel and you've got booger's everywhere (Weld splatter). I found that using Lincoln gasless wire makes a little better weld. I wish I'd gotten a bottled Mig instead. The Harbour Freight was a X-Mas gift and it was my first one. Gas makes a lot better weld in my opinion.

the ones my Dad bought would pulsate like the wire would speed up and slow down, never did work right...
I tried a gasless for my 1st mig, I didn't like it at all so it went back and I got the gas version... you can get migs that go both ways

oh man this is just a cheap little 10'' cutter printer that my brother and i bought off of ebay, its the stika 1200 or something like that. and the problem i have with it is, i can only cut designs in individual colors and then peel them off and stick them together, what i really want is a printer that sprays the color onto the vinyl this way i can mesh colors and stuff. but for now what i got gets the job done.

lol. well we gotta try all kindsa diferent stuff its in our blood. lol anyway i made the inner hole that will screw onto the valve stem way long just cause the instructions of the speedo says there should be no more than .5 mm distance between the sensor and the magnet. so i can install the adapter piece i made and if its to long then i can cut it a bit shorter... one can take off but not add. lol you know. anyways i made this prototype outta plastic just to get all the measurements down, then i can spin a piece of aluminium and make it exact. one thing i found out....useless knowledge, the valve stem on our bikes is 5/16 x 32 threads. its not a comunly used thread size so i ordered the tap at work, i love this corporate credit card lol. actualy the engineer here agreed with me and sayd we should order it just to have. hell yearock2

And the answer to that is no, they did not vibrate out of place; however did vibrate especially where they were mounted. This is my twocents you can fix the vibration problem by getting a (can't remember which one has it) front cowl windshield bracket off of one of the earlier X bikes I wanna say X-8 and cut and reweld it for support. I have one that I haven't quite gotten to do to my bike. I have been to busy riding and have fun with my bike before the riding season is gone here.
Lockhart Phillips has some more mirrors that would work probably with less modding. I did it to these mirrors cause of where I was mounting them.

sweet bro thanks. oh and i know what your saying about getting as much riding in while you can. its starting to get cold here in co. so when its a bit sunny out, im riding. lol ill try to throw some brackets together and take pics. hey maybe during the cold season, you can get to modding that brace for yours and let me know how it went together, some pics to. and thanks again rene.

sweeeeet. i got my swingarm in today at work, thanks to damann33. i cant wait to get to taking some measurements and hacking it up so i can extend it. im going to see if the guys at work can bring in the welder and i can practice. my boss allso said he would like to practice welding and stuff so im thinking ill get some regular old 1/8th inch pipe and bring it to work and practice. for now ill probably just get some pipe and cut it all to the lenght i want''probably 6'' and bend it, then take it accross the street to a shop and pay them to weld it up for me. woohoo im stoked.

ok dumb question i bet. is there a trick to getting the bearings out of the swingarm?

oh hey and when buying the pipe to add to the swingarm, is there a specific kind i should be looking for or is emt conduit fine? i measured the tubing and it seems like 1-1/4 round stock and like .060 thick but i just wanted to make sure i bought the right material. any help is great. thanks guys

Use the bolt that goes through the swingarm and stick it in about almost all they way right before it make it out the other side angle it so that it catches the inner lip of the bearing and tap it with a hammer. It might take a couple of times or just once.
The material on my swingarm is pretty thick don't know what size it is. Once you get your material use a vise to oval it out a little so it would be easier to match up the stock material (just the ends) unless you can find it like that our you can have the stock rolled to oval it.twocents
How much stretch are you going for? Make sure it is strong enough to carry the weight.

ok i was going to pop the bearings out that way, i just wanted to make sure i was right. with the swingarm i can bend the stock myself, i just wanted to make sure that their wasnt a specific type or grade of material i should be looking for. im 130lb on a good day lol so im not to worried about weight, however with moving the tire back a good 5'' or so, i was a bit concerned about any new stress points that might be created, does that make sense. also looking at your bike with the stretched swinger, i can leave the shock mount were it is right, so i just need to get a stronger spring or an entirely new shock?

Yes you could leave it there. I had the 2nd put on so I could drop the rear down some cause she sat high. now I could run a longer shock and still sit low. Your turning radius will change. I noticed that when I ahd my stock tires I had to make wide turns cause if I leaned to much the front of the bike would want to tuck under. Now with the pirelli's I can turn very sharp turns.

gocha. yea im mainly just cruisin so im not to worried about sharp turns at least not at the moment. sweet man thanks for the input. i got those bearings out and im gonna start working on choping up the swinger tomorrow. hopefully everything goes smooth.

NO NO wave_finger conduit is a seamed pipe. It's also very thin walled that won't work. What the exact grade metal and thickness you need I dunno but I believe 125cc can answer that he's the stretch king. If I ever need one do I'm shipping it to him if he'll agree to do it. I think figuring out what you need is kind of hard to get right and that's why 125cc builds from scratch using all the same materials.

Ha! i thought so. thanks nutty. see im not sure about what to use as far as stock cause there is so much stuff out there, emt, ent, rmc, rnc, grc, imc, and so on. im gonna check with the stretch king first and see what he thinks.
thanks bro
