View Full Version : finnally started my paint job!!
well i finally started painting my x18 flat black im using duplicolor paint so far i did the first coat on the tank cover it looks sick but it took about an hour to sand those mold lines and paint lines out with 320 grit then i used 600 grit to make it smoother im doing one part at a time but I will post pics after i finish i just got one bubble probably because of all the fumes i breathed in bluelaugh now im waiting for it to dry and making sure most of my brain cells are still there crazy_smilie

damed if you do,lol
i try to paint when its not windy
but its rained the past few days here and ive painted anyway crazy_smilie
i hang my parts from the garage door, when its up, with coat hangers that ive straightened
the paint spot is at the edge of the garage where its open to the air but still kinda sheltered

Are you going to do anything to stabilize the plastic where you cut out the bottom? Towards the front wheel.

good to see you started your paint job bro. I will be starting today after work on my gsxr paint job. it will be a bit different than my avatar but i found a scheme that looks nice i think, its a bit tricky with two tone and a few contours but will see.
Are you going to do anything to stabilize the plastic where you cut out the bottom? Towards the front wheel. i really didnt think of that do you think they would break from the air and r32 no i didnt want gloss black its always dirty and flat looks way sicker im thinking of neon green wheels too just need some paint and dna you should sand the mold/paint lines off before you start it looks way better

those fairings arent gonna last like that
the 18's are prolly the worst because on the lower side there is only a bolt in the back holding it too the frame
in the front there is nothing
i cut out the bottom of my 15 cause the lower panels bolt up in 4 spots so its stable
on my 18 i did this

that milky look is from the humidity, you should wait til it stops raining and when the humidity drops below 50, Laquer based paints will not turn out in wet conditions, even some enamels will get milky with high humidity...

yea x18 im taking my time with those nasty lines and all the rough edges and seems. ill post in long term here in a bit. as far as the humidity, 125 is right it will give you a sorta milky finish.

yeah i was wondering why that happened well i redid the tank cover and once i finished it fell on the floor it got all scratched and chipped, i just finished it again i did the nose peice too they look better and i didnt use clear, now im sanding the lower faring im going to have to find a way to keep them from breaking

Yea. That's all I was worried about. The fenders are fragile to begin with. Once you start taking material away it gets worse. I've always wanted to cut mine but never done it because I didn't want to have to figure out how to brace them.
well i figured out a way to brace them ill just get some thin stainless steel about an 1nch wide and bend it to go from one side to the other and use bolts to hold it if that makes sense

09-13-2008, 03:04 PM
ok but it still has to bolt to the frame, or else the whole front bottom will sway and stress
well thats the problem theres no frame there have any ideas
or what if i make some type of brace from the upper mount and bolt it to the bottom
r32rider
09-13-2008, 03:36 PM
yeah i have a idea and a damn good one too, get new fairings.
yeah i have a idea and a damn good one too, get new fairings. eh now theres a idea but 1 problem NO MONEY dunno well ill try my idea if it breaks ill get new ones

shet dude i used almost 2 cans for my helmet....you need more coats
i did 3 coats, and 2 cans for a helmet is wayyy to much did you do 20 coats or what and i used up a can already
alright heres some new pictures http://s436.photobucket.com/albums/qq82/x-18bike/?mediafilter=images it looks much better now i need a way to make sure my lower farings dont break any ideas

yeah, can you weld?
I would box it up with like 1/8" metal and just make a square. Might be a little weight but im not sure what else you could do to keep it from breaking

Well i would measure out the opening, go to lowes and get the 90* degree metal rod, make sure its stiff but bendable by hand, then cut the 4 peices ans bend the metal around the body, basically giving it a metal edge and also a square so it wont flex. Its really hard for me to explain haha but its just an idea.

coming along nicely. and yea im gonna paint the inside of the fairings to cause you can see all that.

i was thinking something like that but only 1 peice from the top mount to the bottom and bolt in there it would be easier but still i dont know if it would be strong enough what do you think and dna im going to paint the insides of the lowers too i did that on the nose peice

for the insides of the fairings, i like that spray on rubber undercoating
it looks nice and it adds strength and cuts down on vibration

yup, this is what i got
this time try to run the pipe to the stock spot and rework the screens for a single pipe...your bike was cool except for that one flaw in my eyes
well i started my braces i basically took 49ccs idea but used aluminum tubing and only 2 peices on each side so they go halfway around the farings its not done yet it will be a while just bending the pipes to contour the farings is hard even with a torch and a big hammer maybe by the end of the day ill have pictures of one side
Blitz$M.Inc.$
09-14-2008, 02:39 PM
stunt, it just doesnt look right unless there is two pipes, or if the pipe was centered
the real benelli had an upswept pipe and the screens in the back were really radiator fans

you should try something tho...it just stood out and took away from the bikes lines
im going to try and get some of that undercoating how many cans do i need and no pics today i almost finished one side of the braces but i had to do something else ill get them up tomorrow since im almost done and im still waiting on paint it should be in tommorrow i only had enough for 1 can i knew it wasnt enough

2-3 cans ought to do it
it takes a long time to dry
let it sit in the sun

sweet blitz. i gotta pick up some stuff at the homedepot so ill pick that under coating stuff.
ok i FINALLY got to work on my paint job now i have the right lower faring done and the fenders done 2 peices to go the seat and left lower i have a crack on the left small but i have to drill out the corners and jbweld it and theres a spot i weakened by cutting it theres like literally an inch of material holding the lower rear mounting point so im going put a crap load of jb weld on the back, all of it if i have to so ill have to wait till tommorrow on that or later today
ok i finished the seat area so all i need is the lower left faring i even finished one of the braces to hold my farings they work pretty good ill get pics once i get batteries for my camera
dna316
09-19-2008, 02:04 PM
yea bro pics. me want to see pic. lol

needpics
yeah i know i have a worthless thread anyways ill put up pics tomorrow if i get batteries for my camera i was busy today i had time to start putting it back together ill get a pic from the right side so it looks done bluelaugh
ok i finished reinforcing my farings on the lower left there was a spot that i weakened by cutting my farings i put a really thick layer of jb weld im letting it dry so i can put more and i finished the braces for my farings i just finished painting them an extremely ugly green color its just so they dont rust ill spray some undercoating on them when i get it ill try to get some pics up today if i can go get batteries for my camera
Blitz$M.Inc.$
09-20-2008, 09:40 PM
um plastic is not likely to rust, unless you mean the braces
what are you talking about plastic rusts all the time rolleye0010 haha no i meant the braces there metal and the torch burned the paint off were i had to bend them so i painted them with the only color i had laying around even though it was throw up green (didnt want to waste my good paint) anyways im going to get truck bed liner instead of undercoating it will make them stronger too, pics tomorrow for sure since needpics and im going to paint my clutch cover too since it got all scraped up from my last crash
Blitz$M.Inc.$
09-20-2008, 09:54 PM
hey thats the best use for ugly paint
wont truck bed liner crack if its flexed? (like your fairings will)
i figured it would make them harder and stop them from breaking now im confused again i thought i already made up my mind
